PAFAMS: The Panamerican Federation of Associations of Medical Schools

PAFAMS-LogoPAFAMS is a private, non-profit, international, non governmental organization dedicated to the advancement of medical education and the biomedical sciences in the American Continent, created in 1962 in Viña del Mar, Chile.

UNAMThe organization includes 13 National Associations of Medical Schools and individually affiliated Medical Schools. It’s an organization well known for its prestige, with more than 500 affiliated in the Americas with 49 years of experience in the promotion of the improvement of medical schools performance.

And has access to the best acknowledged experts in medical education. In addition, there is a real need among the Medical Schools in the region to count with an Independent International Accreditation Agency like PAFAMS, other than those governmental agencies.

The aim  has been  to improve the  quality of medical education and, as a consequence, improve the outcomes  of health services delivery,  through a pilot programs to measure the level of training and education given by the medical schools affiliated with PAFAMS; including experiences to improve medical education and clinical research, the application of the Global Minimum Essential Requirements (GMER), developed jointly with  the, Institute for International Medical Education, IIME, along with major efforts in improving communications with  the affiliates through updated information technology.

university-hospital-caracasPAFAMS is undergoing a reengineering process involving all of its members and taking into account the overall mission of the Federation.  Is also updating and redesigning its field of action, mission and vision as well as redirecting its programs and strategic lines of action in agreement with the current pressing socially and economic challenging times.

We are working on the creation of an Agency in charge of the International Accreditation of an institution, a career or a program, it is called International Accreditation Initiative – IAI.  Also we have a proposal for the creation of a Latin American Council of Continuing Medical Education – LACCME.  And has access to the best acknowledged experts in medical education. 

Our programs 2010 – 2012 are Accreditation of Medical Education, including Institutional Accreditation of Basic Medical Education, Postgraduate Medical Education, Continuing Professional Development of (CPD) Medical Doctors.  Also we have, Continuing Professional Development  (CPD), Quality, Leadership and Professionalism: Global Doctor, Clinical Research, Information, Technology and Communications.
