Projects and Publications

WFME works in many projects, partnerships and publications, in support of its objective to enhance the quality of medical education.

These include:

  • The WFME project to define the future role of the medical doctor in global health care
  • WFME distance learning in medical education in collaboration with the Centre for Medical Education in Context (CenMEDIC)
  • The Avicenna Directories of Education Institutions for Health Professions, and its planned future development into the new World Directory of Medical Schools

What doctors do has changed, and is continuing to change.  Societies need to understand what it is that doctors will do in the future, and what will be done by other health care professionals in mixed-competence teams.  Many political, social, demographic and international events necessitate a discussion on the roles and values of the doctor in the world today. The international mobility of both doctors and patients underlines the need for a global definition.

Avicenna

The Avicenna Directory has replaced the World Directory of Medical Schools, published by WHO since 1953, the latest edition appearing in 2000.

In 2007, WHO and the University of Copenhagen signed an agreement to transfer responsibility for the directories to the university, with WFME leading in the development of the Avicenna Directory, a web-based global directory of educational institutions.  The Directory includes all the information that was available in the final edition of the WHO Directory, with updates provided to WHO up to the end of 2007.
