Role of the Doctor
Project on the future global role of the doctor in health care
What doctors do has changed, and is continuing to change. Societies need to understand what it is that doctors will do in the future, and what will be done by other health care professionals. Many political, social, demographic and international events necessitate a discussion on the roles and values of the doctor in the world today. The international mobility of both doctors and patients underlines the need for a global definition.
An international task-force of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is working to agree themes relevant to the role of the doctor globally, and developing a statement that can be used world-wide, and used to develop medical education policy.
The Task Force held its first meeting in Copenhagen in March 2010, and agreed the outline of important issues to be considered. In 2010 and 2011, working subgroups of the Task Force considered the many themes identified at its first meeting, and the Task Force held its second meeting, again in Copenhagen, in March 2012, to discuss the reports of these working subgroups..
In a related project, the Association of Medical Schools in Europe is considering the future role of the medical school at its 2012 Annual Conference, to be held on 7 - 9 June in Padova, Italy.
The final report of the WFME Task Force will be presented and agreed at the second WFME World Conference on Medical Education, in Malmö in November 2012.
